Pre-holiday Prep for Around the House

With the holidays basically upon us, it’s time to make sure all of those little tasks we’ve been putting off around the home are completed. Fortunately, if you’ve recently purchased one of the Grayhawk Waukee IA homes for sale, you shouldn’t have to do much more than clean and decorate. However, if you’ve been in your home for a while, here are some tips on pre-holiday prep to make your home look and work its best while family and friends are visiting.

Let’s not beat around the bush. The bathroom, particularly the toilet, needs to be in perfect working order during the holidays. It gets a lot of work throughout the year, and while you might know some of its quirks, your guests don’t. Go ahead and make sure it’s in perfect working order, fixing any flushing issues and making sure the mounting bolts are tight if it rocks a little.

If you’re going to be doing a lot of cooking and baking, you should make sure all of your knives are sharp, as dull knives can be a greater danger. You should also check your oven and stove to make sure everything is working as it should. Now is not necessarily the time to use the automatic cleaning setting on your oven, which can sometimes cause problems. Just simply give the inside a decent scrub to make sure there’s no burnt food and excess grease that could cause problems or smells. Also make sure the temperature is working properly so you don’t over or undercook your food.

Give your dishwasher a good inspection and clean out any debris that has gathered on the base, clean out the strainer/drain area, and wipe down any soap residue or mold that may form around the door of the dishwasher.

With a shorter amount of daylight, definitely check that all outdoor light bulbs are working, particularly around paths and steps so that no one trips. Also keep de-icer on hand, and make sure handrails, indoors and out, are firmly in place. You may also want to use some double-stick tape on rugs, particularly in the entrance or anywhere they could cause people to trip. It’s important to make your home safe for all ages, so cover up those electric outlets, too.

A few other quick tasks to do include checking/replacing the batteries on smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, make sure you have a fire extinguisher on hand, and keep an up-to-date first-aid kit. Hopefully you won’t need any of these, but with the inevitable distractions during the holidays, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Finally, make sure your coffee machine is in working order and that you don’t have any major calcium buildups or anything else that could limit the flow and ruin the flavor. With a house full of guests, you may need that coffee, even if it means getting up a little early in the morning to savor it and the peace and quiet. If you’re in the process of purchasing one of the Grayhawk Waukee IA homes for sale, you can sit back and relax for a moment and imagine life in your brand new spacious, fully functioning home!
