Create Your Own Chalkboard Wall

These days, chalkboards aren’t just for schools. In fact, there are a variety of rooms in the Grayhawk homes in Opelika AL where you could easily incorporate a chalkboard. Best of all, you don’t have to limit yourself to a small, premade board. With chalkboard paint and a bit of prep, you could create your own chalkboard wall, door, and so much more.

With more people working from home and doing some form of homeschooling, having your own chalkboard wall is increasingly popular and useful. While many people have found ways to incorporate even a partial chalkboard wall into their kitchen for handy notes, from grocery lists to daily schedules, chalkboard paint can be used on the back of bedroom doors, on flexroom walls, sections of home offices, and anywhere you want to give yourself this added convenience and creative outlet.

For some people, it is a matter of having a handy place to write lists, keep track of chores, or teach various subjects as a part of homeschooling. However, chalkboards are also a great way to let family members express their creativity. Painting the door of a child’s room with chalkboard paint gives them a fun outlet to express themselves and can be a nice way for parents to leave encouraging notes. In some cases, those with a serious artistic bent may want to paint a whole wall or the upper part of a wall to create their own artwork. Imagine a dining room with wainscotting along the bottom part of the wall and the upper part filled with your own creative designs. It’s also a fun way to entertain, listing the evening’s menu, and even letting friends and family leave fun “reviews”.

With so many ways and places to incorporate a chalkboard into your home, you’ll be glad to know it’s a fairly easy process that is an easy weekend project. The most important thing is to make sure the wall is smooth, so make sure you fill and sand it if there are any imperfections. Then give it a wash down with sugar soap to ensure it’s thoroughly clean. Make sure you have good quality painter’s tape and tape off the area you plan to paint. You’ll also need to make sure you have protection for floors or other surfaces, because this heavy pigment paint can stain easily. Consider laying down tarp or other thick plastics, rather than just paper. Then, with the appropriate chalkboard paint from the hardware store, start painting! You’ll probably want two or three coats to get the best effect. While black is the most common color, you can get chalkboard paint in a vast array of designer colors, perfect for those who aren’t sold on having a big black wall in their home — even if it is kind of trendy these days.

For those who really aren’t sure yet about painting a whole wall or even a large area, there are blackboard cling films that give you the same effect, but are easier to remove. Plus, you don’t have to wait three days for the paint to dry!Whether you’re moving into one of our new homes in Opelika AL or are already in and discovering a need for a chalkboard of your own, this is a project that just about every home should try. From creative outlets to handy places to make sure everyone sees important lists and schedules, chalkboard walls, doors, cabinets, or whole rooms are a fun, fascinating and surprisingly functional element that will suit any home.
