Soothing Paint Colors to Try

For many people, the home is an oasis away from all the stresses of daily life. It should be a place where you can relax, unwind, and try to focus on happiness and love. The paint colors you choose can play an important role in creating a soothing setting, but finding the right colors for your homes in Auburn AL shouldn’t induce stress. Fortunately, professional designers have come up with a variety of color palettes to make every room in your home feel like a zen sanctuary.

Typically, your best bet for creating a soothing atmosphere is to turn to pale blues, whites, and neutrals, but there’s a lot of leeway in those colors and how you use them. Paint manufacturers offer a vast spectrum of colors that allow you to find just the right color for every room in your home. However, when choosing colors, it really is a good idea to test colors on multiple walls so you can see how they look in real life in different types of light. The change from one wall in a room to the next can be significant, just from natural light. Get samples, not just paint chips of multiple shades to give you the best chance of finding the perfect colors.

Shades of blue are among the top favorites when it comes to creating a peaceful environment. Most designers recommend soft, cool, pale blues, with a white or pale green undertone. You want something clean and airy. Some of the top designer choices are Sea Salt by Sherwin-Williams, and Headspace by Clare Paint. While excellent in bathrooms with white trim or accents, these colors work just as well in living rooms, bedrooms, and any place you want an airy, soft vibe.

Blue doesn’t have to be used just on walls and it doesn’t have to be a pale shade. One great way to use a light blue is on the ceiling of a room, paired with soft white walls. You create your own dreamy blue sky, in effect. Alternatively, you can go with bolder shades of blue, such as Oval Room Blue by Farrow & Ball, which is still a light blue, with touches of gray and green, but a bit bolder than the soft, airy blues. This one will make a statement, but can still be soothing, especially when used for bold trim or cabinets, and paired with light walls. Don’t forget that this year’s big color is Sherwin-Williams’ Naval SW 6244, a deep navy blue. This is an excellent choice for bedrooms for those who prefer a darker sleeping environment. Use it on the upper walls with white wainscotting and trim to stop it from being overwhelming and pair it with lighter furnishings for an elegant bedroom.

There are plenty of neutrals that pair well with these various shades of blue, but also work well in their own right. Many designers are choosing slightly warmer shades of pale neutrals and contrasting them with crisp white trim to highlight the differences, while still creating a soft, soothing space. Feather Down OC-6 by Benjamin Moore is a perfect example that is ideal for open living areas. It pulls the space together, but keeps it light and airy and pairs well with a range of furnishing colors, serving as a great neutral but welcoming backdrop.

If you want to go a bit bolder with your neutrals, Drop Cloth by Farrow & Ball is a great earthy taupe. This is a wonderful color for kitchen and bathroom cabinets and trim, with soft white or super pale gray used on the walls to keep the space warm but light. Cloud White by Benjamin Moore is an excellent soft white that works well in a variety of settings and color pairings.

The key is to think about how you want the space to make you feel and then go with the colors that speak to you. Let your emotions help guide your color choices, especially as you’ll be living with them in your homes in Auburn AL.
